Orienteering and Mapping offers an engaging, hands-on way to connect classroom learning with real-world skills, all while enjoying the great outdoors. The activity develops practical map-reading and decision-making skills. Using a map and compass, students learn to identify their location, plan routes, and navigate between checkpoints across varied terrain.
A key part of orienteering is orienting the map, matching it to visible features such as fences, roads, or buildings, and using these clues to move confidently through the landscape. This encourages students to think critically, stay focused, and make informed choices about the most efficient paths to take.
The session begins with an interactive theory workshop, where students are introduced to key navigation concepts, map symbols, and compass use. They then apply their learning in a practical orienteering challenge around our 80-acre activity centre, exploring beautiful woodland and open fields.Through this activity, students develop:
